User's Guide to the UAB Employee Campus Ride

Definition and Purpose:

The UAB Campus Ride is designed to provide convenient on-campus transportation for all UAB faculty and staff. The primary purpose of the UAB Campus Ride is to provide a safe method of movement for those employees who must travel to various locations on the University campus in order to conduct official UAB business.

Who is eligible to utilize the UAB Campus Ride?

This service is available to all faculty and staff of the University of Alabama at Birmingham to assist these personnel in conducting official UAB business. This service is also available to any UAB student employee currently holding an active work assignment at UAB. In addition, up to one visitor or guest of the University can be transported provided they are escorted by a UAB employee. Children under the age of 18 cannot be transported.

When is this service available?

Hours of operation are from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding all official University holidays.

Where will the UAB Campus Ride go?

The UAB Campus Ride shall provide transportation to and from the campus locations listed. The UAB Campus Ride is not authorized to go to locations off the UAB campus.

How to access the service:

Call 5-TAXI (5-8294) and the dispatcher will ask for the following information:

1.     Your name;

2.     Your department name and account number;

3.     Location from which you need to be picked up.

4.     Your destination;

Special points about the UAB Campus Ride:

Maximum number of passengers per vehicle is strictly limited to six(6). All passengers are required to fasten seat belts. Individuals who refuse to fasten their seat belt will be asked to leave the vehicle. Patrons who will be transporting cargo, boxes or items that cannot be held in their hands or laps must place these items in the trunk of the vehicle. It is the patron's responsibility to load and unload any cargo they may be transporting into and out of the trunk. The driver's only responsibility in such cases is limited to opening and closing the back door of the van. Hazardous materials cannot be transported by the UAB Campus Ride unless they are properly packaged. For information regarding the packaging of these materials, contact Occupational Health and Safety at 4-2487. It is the goal of the UAB Campus Ride service to respond to requests for transport within fifteen (15) minutes of calls for such service. In view of this, vehicles cannot be held for more than (5) minutes at a given location while waiting for a patron. The UAB Campus Ride cannot be used for personal transportation such as taking individuals to and from their personal vehicle or to lunch. This service is for official UAB departmental business only. The UAB Campus Ride will not be able to transport distances of two (2) blocks or less unless special circumstances warrant an exception, i.e., user is carrying a heavy piece of equipment. Smoking, drinking and eating in taxi vehicles is prohibited. The UAB Campus Ride has access to a handicapped equipped van for the transport of    individuals needing accommodation.
