RIDESHARE PROGRAM
UAB STUDENT RIDESHARE FAQS

What is the UAB Student Rideshare Program?  The UAB Student Rideshare Program is a service provided by UAB Parking and Transportation Services.  Students register with the rideshare program, and agree to participate and promote carpooling and other alternative modes of travel.  Students who participate in the rideshare program will receive an incentive to encourage carpooling as an alternative to driving alone.

Who can participate?  Both full-time and part-time UAB Students who are currently enrolled in classes on campus may sign up to participate in the Student Rideshare program.  Students must register with UAB Parking and Transportation Services, identify their carpool partner(s), and record and report the number of days they carpool on a monthly basis during the academic term of participation.  Participants must carpool at least eight or more times during the month (two times a week) to be eligible to receive incentives.  Students register with the program one-time, and must inform UAB’s Parking and Transportation Services at the end of each academic term if they plan to continue participating in the program for the next academic term.

Why participate in the Student Rideshare Program?  Because parking on UAB’s campus is limited.  UAB is a hub of activity for not only students, but for the entire Birmingham region.  Located just south of the region’s center of finance and government, UAB is at the heart of a concentration of world renowned hospitals and medical research facilities.  The university itself is one of the fastest growing in the nation.  While your classes may stress you out, getting to class on time can be a breeze.

What are the incentives?  A $30 pre-paid gasoline card will be provided to registered carpools during each academic term of active participation.  The gas card can be used to purchase fuel for your carpool.  Student carpools will receive their gas card at the end of their first month of participation provided that the carpool turns in a tracking form.  Students who register with the UAB Student Rideshare Program are also eligible to purchase reserved parking spaces.  These spaces, located near or next to academic buildings, are being provided exclusively for carpools.

How do I register for the program?  1.)  Read the Carpool Program Guidelines, 2.)  Read and sign the attached waiver, and 3.) Complete a rideshare application.  Complete the entire application form and indicate the individual(s) who will join your carpool or request a rideshare match.  One member of the carpool group will be registered as the primary member and will receive the financial benefit.  Other members of the carpool will be registered as secondary members.  You can also visit the UAB Parking and Transportation Services web page at www.parking.uab.edu to link with online ridematching services provided by CommuteSmart, the Birmingham region’s rideshare program.

How do I receive the incentive?  Once you have registered you will receive a tracking form to record your carpool activity.  If a form is needed, please visit the UAB Parking and Transportation web page or call the UAB Parking and Transportation Services office to obtain a copy.  Submit the completed tracking form to the Parking and Transportation Services office by the last day of each month.  CommuteSmart Rideshare, on behalf of Parking and Transportation Services, will issue your carpool it’s one time, $30 gas card to the designated person in the carpool group after the first month’s tracking form is received.  Gas cards are not traceable or replaceable.  If damaged, lost, or stolen, they cannot be replaced.

Guidelines for UAB Students

University support of transportation alternatives can have a big impact on a student’s travel mode to and from  school.  CommuteSmart Rideshare provides an incentive to students who commute to school in a carpool arrangement rather than driving alone.

Each student carpool group is eligible to receive up to $30 in the form of a pre-paid gas card, for carpooling at least two days per week.  After the end of the semester and/or four months, carpool participants must renew their parking permit.
